SOCIAL MEDIA POLICYWith the increase in methods for instant public communication, and the potential risk this has raised for breaching patient confidentiality, we believe that strict social media guidance is important. We do, however, recognise that social media represents a valuable tool in expressing the experiences gained by PCP students/mentors, as well as contributing to free online access to medical education (FOAMed).
We ask that students and mentors undertaking our programme comply with the following guidance and rulings pertaining to the use of social media:
Any activity on social media platforms can sadly attract argumentative or rude replies from other users. Should you come across this in reply to your work with the PCP we ask that you do not engage in such conversations, and instead forward it on (via direct message/email) to the PCP Communications Officer who will discuss with the necessary members of the Leadership Team. DISCLAIMERThe Prehospital Care Programme is a Student Selected Component (SSC) run through Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. The Academic Forums are primarily aimed at medical students. While other HCP are welcome, they should practise within their own clinical guidelines.
We ask that students and mentors undertaking our programme comply with the following guidance and rulings pertaining to the use of social media:
- Students are permitted to tweet a monthly summary of their experiences gained on PCP shifts. This must be educational and reflective in quality, and must be sent to the PCP Communications Officer (vial direct message) to be approved before tweeting. These should never include any photographs, or patient-identifiable information. We encourage students to use these tweets as an opportunity to add to FOAMed and discuss what has been learned from cases, as opposed to discussing cases simply for the sake of it.
- Discussion and promotion of PCP events (e.g. academic forums, practical teaching sessions, conferences) is accepted and encouraged on all social media outlets.
- Your PCP mentors may choose to tweet about their shifts with you. You are permitted to share these, however you should ensure they are confidential in nature and comply with LAS Social Media Policy (this will be available for you to familiarise yourself with).
- Discussion of experiences gained whilst on a PCP shift is ONLY accepted via Twitter. No other social media platform should be used (therefore NO Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Vine etc.)
- The official PCP account (@The_PCP) must be tagged in every tweet regarding shifts.
- Students are not permitted to tweet about their shifts with London's Air Ambulance or Essex & Herts Air Ambulance.
- All PCP students are required to attend an annual social media workshop organised by the committee.
